Schleswig-Holstein has two worlds: inland towns with four shopping days at most, and the North Sea and Baltic resorts with their own ordinance. The four days fall under section 5 of the Shop Opening Hours Act. Shops may open for a special occasion on up to four Sundays and holidays a year; the competent authority sets the days by ordinance. Opening may not exceed five consecutive hours and must end by 6 pm, with regard for the main church service. A release may be limited to districts and trades. Good Friday, 1 May, Easter Sunday, Whit Sunday, Volkstrauertag, Totensonntag, the Advent Sundays, every Sunday and holiday in December and 24 December may not be released. The act was last amended in May 2026; the four-day rule stayed in place. Kiel publishes its dates as a municipal ordinance.

The provision is section 5 of the Schleswig-Holstein Shop Opening Hours Act, as of the act of 22 May 2026. For 2027 it allows 43 Sundays and bars 9.
