Leipzig names two shopping Sundays for 2026, both in Advent: the first Advent Sunday on 29 November and the third on 13 December, each in the city centre, meaning the Zentrum district including the shopping arcades in the main station, and each for the Leipzig Christmas market. The legal basis is a city ordinance under section 8 of the Saxon Shop Opening Act. Saxony is one of the few states that expressly allow Advent Sundays, and it fixes the hours: noon to 6 pm. The city’s page notes that many shops open only from 1 pm. The city names no other Sundays in spring or autumn for 2026. No ordinance for 2027 has been published yet; Leipzig usually adopts it during the preceding year or early in the year. Anyone visiting Leipzig in Advent will find the centre’s shops open on these two Sundays.
The Christmas market as the occasion
Saxony allows four Sundays a year plus one for a regional event. Leipzig uses only two for 2026, both in Advent. That sets it apart from Dresden, which releases district festivals in summer and autumn as well as Advent Sundays. One reason for the Advent focus: the Christmas market is an occasion with a large crowd of its own, as the law requires.
Hours are not negotiable in Saxony. Unlike most states, the act sets not just a maximum length but a fixed window from noon to 6 pm. More on the rules in Advent: shopping Sundays in Advent.
