Brandenburg allows five shopping days, one more than most states, and keeps Advent open. Under section 5 of the Brandenburg Shop Opening Act, shops may open for special events on up to five Sundays or public holidays a year from 1 pm to 8 pm, provided noise protection does not stand in the way. The local public order authority sets the days and hours by ordinance. If only part of the municipality is released, the day still counts for the whole municipality. No more than two days within four weeks are allowed. Good Friday, Easter Sunday, Whit Sunday, Volkstrauertag, Totensonntag and both Christmas holidays are barred. One further day may be released for a regional event such as a club or street festival in the area concerned, with each area reaching five days at most in total. Which day a municipality has chosen is found only in its own ordinance.

What the law allows in Brandenburg

The rule is section 5 of the Brandenburg Shop Opening Act. For 2027 it allows 47 Sundays. Apart from the days listed, holidays are not barred, so a weekday holiday can be one of the five days. Spa and resort towns have a separate rule of up to 40 days.

Common questions

How long are shops open on a Brandenburg shopping Sunday?

From 1 pm to 8 pm under section 5(1) of the Brandenburg act, seven hours and longer than in almost any other state. A municipality may set shorter hours in its ordinance. The extra day for a regional event is also limited to 1 pm to 8 pm.

Can Brandenburg release shopping Sundays during Advent?

Yes. The act bars no Advent Sunday, only the two Christmas holidays. The limit of two shopping days within four weeks still applies, though. A municipality can therefore release two of the four Advent Sundays and no more, spreading its remaining days over the rest of the year.

What counts as a regional event in Brandenburg?

The act names traditional club or street festivals and special anniversaries. For such an event the authority may release one more Sunday or holiday, but only for the shops affected in the area it describes. Each area thus reaches five days a year at most, under section 5(2).
