Dresden adopted five shopping Sundays for 2026 in two ordinances of the state capital. Two apply across the whole city: the first Advent Sunday on 29 November and the third on 13 December, both for the 592nd Striezelmarkt and the other Christmas markets in the Altstadt and Neustadt. The other three are regional dates under section 8(2) of the Saxon act and apply only to certain streets: Pieschen-Süd on 7 June for the “sankt pieschen” district festival, Loschwitz on 28 June for the Elbhangfest between Körnerplatz and Pillnitz Palace, and the Innere Neustadt on 4 October for the family festival at the Golden Rider. Every date runs from noon to 6 pm, as the state prescribes. No ordinance for 2027 had appeared by 29 October 2026; Dresden usually adopts it early in the year.
Whole city in Advent, single streets in summer
Dresden shows the two kinds of Sunday the Saxon act provides. The Advent Sundays apply to every shop in the city, because the Striezelmarkt draws visitors from across the country. The summer and autumn dates, by contrast, are tied to a festival in one district and take effect only there. That way the city stays within the maximum and can still accompany several festivals.
Compared with Leipzig, which releases only the two Advent Sundays in 2026, Dresden makes fuller use of the state’s leeway. The second and fourth Advent Sundays stay closed in both cities. Advent rules in every state: Advent.
