In Rhineland-Palatinate it is not only towns that decide but also associations of municipalities. Section 10 of the Shop Opening Act lets independent municipalities, Verbandsgemeinden, and independent and large district towns set up to four shopping Sundays per municipality and year by ordinance, for their whole area or parts of it. The act itself names no specific occasion. Opening may not exceed five hours and may not fall between 6 am and 11 am, so 11 am is the earliest start. Easter Sunday, Whit Sunday, Volkstrauertag, Totensonntag, the Advent Sundays in December and Sundays that are also public holidays are barred. A first Advent Sunday still in November is therefore possible: 29 November in 2026 and 28 November in 2027. Weekday holidays cannot be released here, since the act speaks only of Sundays. Our list has few towns with published dates for this state so far.
What the law allows in Rhineland-Palatinate
The provision is section 10 of the Rhineland-Palatinate Shop Opening Act, last amended on 22 December 2015. For 2027 it leaves 43 Sundays that are not excluded. Where no ordinance is known, we show no date for the municipality.
