Shopping Sundays in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania

Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania has had a new Opening Hours Act since 1 February 2024. It separates the coastal spa and resort towns, which have their own Sunday openings under section 5, from the rest of the state. For municipalities and districts outside the resort rule, section 6 allows extra opening hours for a special occasion on up to four Sundays a year that are not public holidays. The competent authority sets them; opening must avoid the main church service times. The act names no fixed hours and no maximum duration. Easter Sunday, Whit Sunday and the Sundays in December are barred, except the first Advent Sunday even when it falls in December. Also new: shops may open until midnight on four Saturdays a year if they give two weeks’ written notice. Which Sundays a town has chosen is shown only by its own decision.
