A shopping Sunday in Germany happens only when a town has officially released it, for a defined area, at defined hours and usually for a festival or market. The frame comes from the state’s shop opening act: three days a year in Baden-Württemberg, four in most states, five in Brandenburg, six in Lower Saxony, eight in Berlin and North Rhine-Westphalia. For this site we read all sixteen acts in their official wording and went through the ordinances, gazettes and general orders of 101 towns. For 2026 the list holds 390 dates in 79 towns, and 19 towns have already decided for 2027. The finder above takes today’s date from your device and shows the next dates, or only today or this weekend if you prefer. Every entry links to the town’s source; where there is none, the list says “not yet published”. Nothing you enter leaves your browser.

How the date finder works
The finder knows every date on our list with its day, town, area, occasion, hours and source. When the page opens it reads your device’s date and shows the upcoming dates, the next one with a countdown to opening time. Choose “Today” or “This weekend” as the period and only the days in that period remain. The search box takes you straight to a town; picking a state shows all its towns together.
The calendar file copies exactly the displayed selection into your calendar, on a phone or a computer. Each entry carries the area, occasion, hours and a link to the source, so you can check shortly before the date whether it still stands. Dates without exact hours appear as all-day entries.
May this Sunday be released at all in your state?

| Maximum per year | 8 |
| Opening hours | from 13:00, 5 hours at most |
| Possible Sundays 2026 | 47 / 52 |
| Who releases | the local public order authority, by ordinance |
The small calculator above answers a different question: not whether a town is open, but whether the state act allows a given Sunday at all. Easter Sunday, Whit Sunday, Volkstrauertag and Totensonntag are excluded almost everywhere, plus Advent, December or certain holidays depending on the state. What the act bars, no town can release.

Understanding shopping Sundays in Germany
The sixteen states’ rules in brief
Since 2006 the states have been responsible for shop hours. All have passed their own acts, Bavaria last, with effect from 1 August 2025. They resemble each other in substance but differ a great deal in detail.
Maximum. Three days in Baden-Württemberg, four in eleven states, five in Brandenburg, six per town in Lower Saxony, eight in Berlin and North Rhine-Westphalia. In Lower Saxony a single district may use no more than four of them; in North Rhine-Westphalia a town can reach up to sixteen days through district releases. Berlin also lets each shop add two days for its own occasion, such as an anniversary.
Who decides. In most states the town, by ordinance. Berlin sets the days for the whole city by a general order of the Senate administration, Hesse requires a general order published three months ahead, and in Thuringia districts and independent towns decide. In Saarland the shops choose themselves and notify the local police authority.
Occasion. Bavaria, Baden-Württemberg, Bremen, Hesse and others require a festival, market or fair. North Rhine-Westphalia also lists reviving town centres and supporting retail; Lower Saxony and Saxony-Anhalt a public interest in revival. Saarland and Rhineland-Palatinate name no specific occasion in the act. In full: the shop opening acts compared.

Why Sunday enjoys special protection
Article 140 of the Basic Law incorporates Article 139 of the Weimar Constitution: Sunday and state-recognised holidays remain protected by law as days of rest from work and of spiritual elevation. That does not ban all work, but it sets a rule: rest is the norm, opening the justified exception.
The Federal Constitutional Court spelled this out for shop opening on 1 December 2009. Berlin had released all four Advent Sundays; the court found a breach because the exception had become the rule. A mere interest in turnover on the shops’ side and in shopping on the customers’ side is not enough. Since then administrative courts have examined every release for a sound reason and for whether the festival, not shopping, defines the day.
For shoppers this has a practical consequence: an announced Sunday is only certain once it has happened. Trade unions regularly challenge ordinances, and courts stop individual dates in urgent proceedings. That is why the finder shows the source for every date, so you can check the position yourself.
Dates in 2026 and 2027: what the list shows
For 2026 the list holds 390 entries, 232 of them from September onwards. An entry is one Sunday in one area: a town releasing the same day for three districts has three entries. The yearly overview is under shopping Sundays 2026.
For 2027, 19 towns have adopted dates so far, 79 in total. Most towns decide between November and February. Easter Sunday 2027 is 28 March 2027; since it is barred everywhere, spring festivals with a shopping Sunday often move a week earlier or later. What is already fixed: shopping Sundays 2027.

| 1. Advent, Sun 29 November | possible |
| 2. Advent, Sun 6 December | barred |
| 3. Advent, Sun 13 December | barred |
| 4. Advent, Sun 20 December | barred |
For 22 towns we found no official notice for 2026. Partly there were no releases, partly towns announce their dates only briefly in press releases. The list of every town with its status is under shopping Sundays by town.
What is open on an ordinary Sunday
Even without a shopping Sunday not everything is shut. Every state lets bakeries, pastry shops and florists open for a few hours, often with limits on holidays. Petrol stations may sell travel needs and pharmacies run emergency rotas. Shops in railway stations and airports may sell travel goods, in many states a wider range too.
Then there are spa, recreation and excursion resorts. Shops with tourist goods there may often open on many Sundays a year, on the coast during the season, for example. These rules have nothing to do with the towns’ shopping Sundays and are not on our list; they follow separate provisions and usually cover selected goods. Where a town announces such a special rule as a date, as Bremerhaven does for the Havenwelten, the entry is marked accordingly.
How we choose and check sources
For each town we first look for the ordinance or general order in the official gazette, then the town’s own page and that of its marketing company. We take the date, area, occasion and hours as they stand there and note the reading date. Where an ordinance gives a rule rather than a date, such as “the second Sunday in October”, we compute the date and say so.
We do not use aggregator sites, shopping-centre advertising or newspaper articles. They are often right but not always current, and they cannot be traced back to a decision of the town. Where there is no official source we write “not yet published” or “no source” rather than guess. We read the acts in the states’ law portals. Details of the method are under method.
No shop, chain or shopping centre is promoted here. Where an ordinance names individual stores, we describe the area neutrally.
Bavaria: the new shop closing act since August 2025
Until the end of July 2025 Bavaria still applied the federal Shop Closing Act, with four Sundays and holidays. The Bavarian Shop Closing Act keeps the four days but sets them out anew: no more than five consecutive hours between 10 am and 6 pm, an occasion drawing a substantial number of visitors, and a fixed list of barred days, including the Advent Sundays in December. New are up to eight late shopping nights on weekdays until midnight that the town may release, and four more that each shop may notify itself.
The first Advent Sunday stays possible in Bavaria when it falls in November, as on 29 November 2026. More on Bavarian towns under shopping Sundays in Bavaria, such as Munich or Landshut.
Common questions
What is a verkaufsoffener Sonntag?
A Sunday or public holiday on which shops may open by way of exception because the town has allowed it for a defined area and defined hours. The basis is the state’s shop opening act. The day is usually tied to a festival, market or trade fair. Without such a release shops stay closed on Sundays, apart from a few exceptions such as bakeries.
How many shopping Sundays may a German town have?
Each state decides. Baden-Württemberg allows three days a year; Bavaria, Bremen, Hamburg, Hesse, Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, Rhineland-Palatinate, Saarland, Saxony, Saxony-Anhalt, Schleswig-Holstein and Thuringia four; Brandenburg five; Lower Saxony six; Berlin and North Rhine-Westphalia eight. Large cities in North Rhine-Westphalia may release further days for single districts.
What are the opening hours on a shopping Sunday?
The town sets them within the state’s limits. Saxony allows noon to 6 pm, Berlin and Brandenburg 1 pm to 8 pm, Hesse and Thuringia up to six hours ending at 8 pm, Bavaria five hours between 10 am and 6 pm. Many other states allow five hours ending at 6 pm. The exact hours appear with each date in the finder.
Are shops open on the first Advent Sunday?
It depends on the state. The first Advent Sunday in 2026 is 29 November 2026. Saxony, Berlin, Brandenburg and Saxony-Anhalt allow every Advent Sunday, Bavaria and Rhineland-Palatinate the first as long as it falls in November, Thuringia the first or second. Baden-Württemberg, Bremen, Hamburg, Hesse, Lower Saxony and Schleswig-Holstein bar Advent entirely.
Where do the dates come from?
Only from official sources: ordinances and general orders in official gazettes, town websites, their official marketing companies and the states’ law portals. Each source carries the date we read it. We do not copy aggregator sites, advertising or newspaper reports, because they often fail to record cancellations and court rulings.
Can a shopping Sunday be cancelled at short notice?
Yes. If the festival behind the opening is called off, the town often withdraws the Sunday too. Trade unions or churches can also go to the administrative court, and urgent rulings sometimes come a few days before the date. We record cancellations once the town publishes them, but advise checking the town’s page again shortly before.
Is anything I enter stored or sent?
No. Town, state and period are handled only by your browser, as is your device’s date. There is no account and no form. The calendar file is created on your device. Only when you change something does the page write your choice into the address bar so you can share the link; that too stays with you.
