Saxony is one of the states that keep Advent open. Under section 8 of the Saxon Shop Opening Act, municipalities may allow opening by ordinance on up to four Sundays a year for a special occasion, always from noon to 6 pm. Two Sundays may follow each other directly, but then the two Sundays before and the two after must stay closed. A Sunday released only for some districts still counts for the whole municipality. One more Sunday may be added for a regional event such as a traditional street fair, a Christmas market or an anniversary, only in the area concerned; a municipality may have eight of these at most. Easter Sunday, Whit Sunday, Volkstrauertag, Totensonntag and Sundays falling on 24 or 31 December or on a public holiday are barred. Dresden and Leipzig therefore use Advent Sundays for their Christmas markets.

What the law allows in Saxony

The legal basis is section 8 of the Saxon Shop Opening Act as in force since 1 December 2020. The fixed window of noon to 6 pm applies to every release; towns choose only the day and the area. For 2027 the act allows 45 Sundays.

Common questions

Are shopping Sundays allowed during Advent in Saxony?

Yes. Section 8 of the Saxon act bars no Advent Sunday, only Christmas Eve and New Year’s Eve when they fall on a Sunday. In 2026 the fourth Advent Sunday is 20 December and therefore possible. Many Saxon towns place one or two of their four Sundays in Advent, in step with their Christmas markets.

Can two shopping Sundays in a row happen in Saxony?

Yes, but only two, with a gap: after two consecutive shopping Sundays, the two Sundays before and the two after stay closed, under section 8(1). A third Sunday in a row is never allowed. This matters most during Advent. Each town sets its own dates within these limits.

What is the extra Sunday for regional events in Saxony?

Besides the four Sundays, a municipality may allow one more Sunday a year for a special regional event, such as a traditional street fair or a Christmas market, but only for the shops affected in the area it names. No more than eight such days are allowed in one municipality, under section 8(2).
