Saarland does things its own way: shopping Sundays are not set by the town or municipality but by the shop owners themselves. Under section 8 of Saarland’s Shop Opening Act, shops may open on up to four Sundays and public holidays a year. The owners choose the days and hours and notify the local police authority at least fourteen days ahead. Opening may last five consecutive hours at most, ending by 6 pm and ideally outside the main church service. New Year, 1 May, Easter Sunday, Whit Sunday, Volkstrauertag, Totensonntag, Good Friday and every Sunday and holiday in December are excluded; only a first Advent Sunday that falls in December remains possible. Because there is no municipal ordinance, Saarland dates often appear only in traders’ advertising. We list them only once a town or its official marketing body publishes them.
What the law allows in Saarland
The provision is section 8 of the Saarland Shop Opening Act as amended on 4 December 2017, as shown on the state portal on 29 October 2026. For 2027 the act makes 44 Sundays possible. Because each owner registers separately, neighbouring shops may open on different Sundays.
