Prepared by Radif Partners · Method · acts and ordinances checked on 29 October 2026
Duisburg put all its 2026 shopping Sundays into a single ordinance, published in official gazette no. 11 of 31 March 2026, with street lists for each district. The centre in the Mitte district opens four times: for the spring festival in April, the “Duisburg in Lack und Chrom” car show in September, the pumpkin festival in October and on the fourth Advent Sunday, 20 December, for the Christmas market. Neumühl in the Hamborn district has three dates, including its Revier festival and a medieval market; Meiderich two, Alt-Homberg and Hochemmerich one each. Every date runs from 1 pm to 6 pm, 11 entries in all. The late Advent date stands out: many North Rhine-Westphalian towns put their single Advent Sunday on the first or second, Duisburg on the last before Christmas. No ordinance for 2027 had appeared by 29 October 2026.
One ordinance for the whole year
Duisburg takes the opposite route to Dortmund: one ordinance for the whole year, covering every district and street. For visitors that is clear, as the calendar has been fixed since March 2026. For each date the city names the streets where shops may open, to make clear that the occasion shapes the area.
The festivals range from the car show in the centre to the traditional “673 years of Neumühl” event. The number of dates per area stays below the state limit. More towns on the Lower Rhine and in the Ruhr: Essen and Düsseldorf.
